With ESPN airing another one of their great 30 for 30’s this week (Catching Hell
starring poor Steve Bartman the infamous kid who tried to grab a ball and
the whole Cub fan base blamed him for losing the game and series and not
making it back to the World Series.)
I thought it would be a great time to remind everyone of a theme that I
firmly believe in.
I always say live every day like it is your last and enjoy Mondays as much
as Fridays, etc etc.
But I don’t want to ever confuse passion of life, work, and family with that
same crazy passion and dedication to sports.
Sports are sports…they are great to play and compete in, as a coach I want
nothing more than to win the championship each year. Those are my
expectations and I am disappointed with myself if we can’t achieve it.
But it is only a game…
Love your family.
Love your job and work tirelessly to improve at it.
BUT…
LIKE sports.
That’s it.
If you do anymore than like your sports team then you are bordering on what
is deemed an obsession or intense love. And intense love should be reserved
for improving your family’s living arrangements, making your friends feel happy
and engaged by your friendship, and helping make charities get that extra push
that they need through your donations.
Businesses need people who love life, love family and like sports.
Successful business are not built on workers who obsess about their sports
teams and if they have a little bit of time worry about their kids and their
job that they are being paid to do.
Make the decision today to appreciate and like sports and everything that
they provide in life but don’t cross the line into a love and obsession of them.
(Unless of course you are being paid as a GM, coach, or professional athlete!)
