Five ways I think we can and will get better.
Five ways that I have improved.
And remember work is what we do for a living, but it is not everything we do in
life. Keep numerous hobbies, interests, and pasttimes beyond that so that you
“don’t have a career, you have a life!”
So without further ado here are my tips in a short post in how you can
become smarter, make more money, have more fun, and do better at your
current position.
And NO #1 is not “We need you to come in on the weekends and work 80
hours a week.”
That leaves you room for nothing but complaining to your family and friends.
1) Stop refreshing your email. In fact if you would be allowed to without
getting in trouble with your manager get it off of your phone. I am entrenched
and a firm believer in our great advances of technology but we waste entirely
too much time refreshing and refreshing emails all day. Waiting for some
powerful email to suddenly appear from our dream client. Guess what…if that
email comes in they don’t expect you to email back within ten seconds.
I took email off of my phone four years ago, gave all of my clients my cell
phone number for emergencies and I have doubled my productivity. Once in a
blue moon a client calls with something important and I am happy to take the
call. But other than that the emails are always returned within a few hours
and I have never had a complaint about this.
2) Keep your funnel overflowing!

If it is sales, IT, accounting, teaching, whatever your profession keep it filled!
Even if you think you have enough prospects, ideas, cutting edge thoughts
and enhancements…you don’t! If I have a budget of $100k in a month I make
sure I am pitching twice that amount. And if for some reason I closed
everything…I would pitch twice that amount the next month. Keeping your
funnel full keeps you in a position to WIN in any industry!
3) Work the WRONG side of your brain.
If you typically read sales books, go to sales conferences, have happy hour
with sales guys from one of your competitors etc.
Try this for a week:
Go to a live musical, read a mystery novel, and go hang out with a bunch of
teachers at a high school basketball game.
RINSE.
REPEAT.
Make your brain work in ways that it is not used to and you will learn new
tendencies, applications, and thought provoking ideas to improve yourself
as a worker.
4) Stay out of DRAMA and Smile!
That water cooler is for water only. No one would admit to enjoying the office
drama or gossip but you would be shocked how much you involved yourself in it
if you truly thought about it.
It won’t get you anywhere. Instead smile and say GOOD MORNING to everyone
you work with and ask them how their evening was, if their kids team won last
weekend, etc. And if they only reply with gossip and want to talk about drama…
THEN
Leave it at Good Mornin’!
5) If this is the best part of your day…start thinking about what you
really want to do with your work because this isn’t IT!
I love what I do and these actions have helped me out tremendously to improve
over the years. If you have any more to add post on here and email me at
