Too too often that is the attitude people have taken towards their jobs.
Not my problem…not my department…not my concern.
With the changes in digital over the past five to ten years accountability has
changed…we now have to be accountable!
No ifs ands or butts.
This is the first part in a two part piece. The second part will focus exclusively
on how twitter has changed and benefited sports broadcasting as a result
of the digital age.
Today I am going to briefly go over the changes that digital has caused my
industry, media/media sales, and specifically sports marketing!
I was asked to give a speech tomorrow by a friend for a group of marketing
and business high school teachers (if all goes well with technology I will post
the presentation on here!) and one thing she wanted me to speak about
was what has digital done to my job and my industry.
Big topic that you could probably write a book on but the one thing that I kept
coming back to as I prepared for this presentation was one word:
ACCOUNTABILITY
The digital age has caused accountability to increase amongst media and media
sales reps.
We no longer sit at the fax machine and wait for orders to come in from
agencies…you used to book the radio or TV and cross your fingers that it
would work.
But if it didn’t it was okay, nowadays if your campaigns don’t work and you
don’t take accountability you will wind up like poor old PETE!
Digital has caused myself to:
1) Increase my care and service for my current accounts.
2) Read more and learn more to come up with brighter and more effective ideas.
3) Be more cognizant of the new opportunities with digital and how certain
ones can fit into radio and benefit my client.
4) Every dollar is being more closely scrutinized by my clients so I need to work
(To quote Kanye and Daft Punk)
HARDER BETTER FASTER STRONGER
This all leads back to accountability. It has been driven into me since I started
in this industry but it wasn’t always necessarilly instilled in everyone
unfortunately.
Take accountability…because digital can be tracked…and tracked closely.
So if your ideas aren’t causing your clients to get more business then you will
be held accountable and lose the account.
The GOOD NEWS is it has caused me to do all of the positive things listed above
and overall it has turned my attention to detail, work ethic, drive, and openness
to learning and training more through the roof.
Which I ultimately hope will benefit every one of my clients.
And it all goes back to one word: ACCOUNTABILITY!
Thanks for reading everyone, I appreciate it and hope you enjoyed!

I will post the second portion of this article next week but it will link out to a
new site that I am writing for. (I can’t publish it all on here)
And I will post my presentation if possible and radio advertising strategies and
changes with digital media soon.
Until then…
