BOOK REVIEW TIME!
I just finished up “Speak Human: Outmarket the big guys by getting personal”
by Eric Karjaluoto.
I am trying to get better in not telling people an entire movie, book, or concert
before they experience it for themselves (it is HARD for me though!) so I will
keep this brief and leave you with a few thoughts and takeaways that I took
from it and let you decide if is right for you.
First off….
IF YOU OWN A SMALL BUSINESS READ THIS BOOK!
I repeat…
IF YOU OWN A SMALL BUSINESS READ THIS BOOK!
If you don’t here are some things I still learned/remembered to start trying to
do again from it:
1) The two most important words in sales: I’m Sorry. It can go a long way.
2) Be Honest with your clients at all times or you will find yourself in a big
pile of SH*T with them some day. This should go without saying but it never
ceases to occur.
3) The Ten Brand Commandments…Great Tips and Case Stories…I’ll let you
find out what they are on your own.
4) Every Sales Manager in the country wants to talk and hear about new
business…let’s not forget to love and thank our old business every single day
because they are the ones paying your bills.
5) NO MORE BOOTY CALL SALES! If you are still doing it…STOP…
Don’t take someone’s money if you don’t think it is going to work or if you may
wake up the next day thinking…sorry this isn’t working out.
Think Long Term.
And oh boy pins and needless for Number Six…
6) And I quote from the book “Don’t confuse marketing with fun.”
What??
I guess I should rename my blog and reconsider what I have been doing in
this industry since I was 19 years old LOL!
Actually what he says is not every marketing exercise is an opportunity to “play.”
Take it serious and come up with real well thought out serious ideas that
are going to help your brand, your clients, your company, and ultimately
your industry and this world.
Don’t confuse every part of your business as serious stuff but marketing as
just the fun time when you get to be “creative.”
And while I want my life and this blog to be fun and light hearted…he is right.
I do take my job and my clients very seriously…I just prefer to do it with a
smile on my face and some pep in my step and know that the world isn’t going to
end if I mess something up.
It may end though if I mess up and don’t say “I’m Sorry” like you are supposed to.
