I am in 100% commission sales and I don’t “cold call.”
And I am okay with admitting this.
A hush falls over my sales team at the meeting if and when I announce this!
However I do prospect…all the time in fact. I constantly contact new businesses
and decision makers with unique ideas and questions about their industry to try
to help them solve challenges that they may not even realize they have.
But no I do not cold call. I do not pick up the phone and call a company and
ask for their marketing director or owner and then say “I was hoping to get
together to talk about your advertising.”
Those times are over and I always tell people to “quit living in the past!” (Insert
Big Lebowski joke there!)
It is now a social call. I find out the decision maker’s name through linkedin
and drop off my business card with my personal blog and QR code on it.
Or I tweet to my followers about a local business I enjoy and see if they
respond to me.
I compliment a company on their facebook page and offer suggestions.
It is a social call now folks.
Quit cold calling, keep prospecting, and the sales funnel will stay FULL!
I spoke to someone today whose company had them pick up the phones all day
long and make a “cold call push.”
He didn’t sell anything and he said he felt crappy all doing it, like he was
wasting people’s time.
As a marketing specialist, a sales rep, an account manager whatever you would
prefer to call yourself…one rule is NEVER WASTE YOUR CLIENTS TIME!
So tomorrow…don’t make that cold call.
Have a little fun with it and make it a social call!!
I would give you more examples but then again I wouldn’t want to give away
all of my secrets.
