On a recent trip to San Fran my wife and I hung with her good friend from high
school Abi and upon entering her apartment we discovered there was one
thing missing: TELEVISION!!!
She didn’t own one…(little did we know she watches shows on Hulu…)
VERY TRICKY ABI!
So Jill and I decided to give up television for 30 days…or basically live as though
we don’t own one. If we were at a sports bar it’s not as if we had to shield
ourselves from the TV but we also tried to not watch it.
This was a social experiment from someone who claims they never watch TV
(ME) but actually does watch sports quite a bit and someone who claims they
love TV (Jill) and actually does watch murder shows quite a bit.
So the 30 days are over and here are my findings and thoughts about this:
1) Since it ended on Sunday I have only watched the three DVR’d Entourage
shows I missed and the 4th Quarter of Packers Saints last night so I guess
I really didn’t miss it that much. Jill has been the same way except an
episode or two of The Closer instead of Q4 of the NFL last night.
2) We READ so much more! I probably read 7 or 8 books in those 30 days…
Hence my book list blog last week.
3) We communicated WAY more…we had quite a few nights where we sat
and talked about our businesses, life, and ideas over a glass of wine on the
patio and an I pod on.
4) We did drink more than usual with a few extra happy hours…but whoever
didn’t benefit from an extra happy hour or two?!?!
5) We exercised more and we worked WAY more…staying late and getting up
earlier.
Now by no means were Jill and I couch potatoes before this…I work out six
days a week and take my job very seriously. But I always believe in room
for improvement and taking this time away from TV provided it for me.
If you are looking for ways to improve your drive, your business,
your marketing strategy, etc. I recommend this 30 days PLAN TO YOU TODAY!
Start it right away…don’t get in a huge day of TV watching.
When it is over you will realize there are shows you still want to watch (for me
the NFL and Entourage come to mind) but you will still read way more,
listen and communicate better and more often with your family, and overall
I feel have a better chance to succeed in your goals at work and at home!
So what are you waiting for?!?! Kill your TV for 30 days.
Some people may say that is stupid or you are crazy or why would anyone
think of such a thing…
Those are the people that can’t live without their television show of the night
that probably isn’t all that good anyways!
Live better, learn more, communicate more often, work smarter, and work out
harder…and maybe drink a little bit more VINO…those are my takeaways
from our August social experiment!
